English 5L focuses on American literature spanning from the Colonial period to the 20th century. Students will engage with works from various authors, including The Crucible, Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry, Edgar Allan Poe, and Go Ask Alice, alongside selected short stories and poetry. The course focuses on themes such as societal pressure, personal upbringing, cultural values, persuasive communication, symbolism, and the quest for belonging. Students will participate in a variety of speaking, listening, and writing assignments, including MLA-format papers, argumentative essays, and creative pieces. Each unit will also prioritize daily grammar exercises and vocabulary development. Additionally, the course will introduce transitional topics to prepare students for expectations in the workforce. Prerequisite: Successful completion of English 4L
