Making a Difference: AVID students assist The Giving Tree

In celebration of World Kindness Day, Plymouth Whitemarsh High School students in the AVID program took time out to do good for others.

The students helped make cards, decorate gift bags, and assembled two types of kits for The Giving Tree, an organization that partners with schools to help feed the hungry and assist the homeless. Service learning is a part of the AVID curriculum, which is designed to help students be more successful in the classroom and prepare for college.

Students put together 50 Helena’s Hope Bags, which consisted of a knit hat, gloves, and socks, along with a note. According to literature from The Giving Tree, the project is named after an activist who assisted the homeless in Philadelphia, a city where more than 1,000 individuals sleep on the streets.

The students will also make Little Lunch Bags, which are assembled using granola bars, applesauce, and other non-perishable items. These bags will be for children experiencing food insecurity.
