SNAP benefits remain for students

SNAP benefits remain for students

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is projected to run out of funding in November due to the government shut-down. This federal program provides funding for families who need additional assistance paying for groceries.

Students who currently receive SNAP benefits are automatically eligible for free school meals through a process called direct certification. Once a student’s eligibility is determined, it remains in place for the entire school year—even if funding for SNAP ends. This means any child receiving free school meals based on SNAP participation will continue to receive free lunch for the remainder of the school year.

In addition to lunch, ALL students are eligible for free breakfast, regardless of income. The universal free breakfast program has been in place for several years, with meals served daily to Colonial School District students before the school day begins.  Visit our webpage to get information about when breakfast is served at our buildings.

Families who may lose SNAP benefits are encouraged to seek help from area food pantries and organizations. Please visit the link below for a list of food sites in Montgomery County, including addresses and distribution times:

Colonial School District is a caring community, and we anticipate that people will want to offer help for others in this uncertain time. Stay tuned for more information coming next week about a district initiative we are planning to support others, and how everyone can contribute.
