Plymouth Whitemarsh DECA students raise over $6,000 for local animal shelter
Two Plymouth Whitemarsh High School students raised over $6,000 to benefit a local dog rescue through the organization of a Paws to the Rescue 5K, Mile Walk, and 100-meter Kids Dash held in November.
Eliza Meersman and Ethan Gold, both of the high school's DECA club, spent months planning, promoting, and coordinating the event, which drew 180-plus runners and walkers and around 40 volunteers together to support the Lucky Pups organization. Eliza and Ethan’s Community Giving Project idea quickly became much more than just a shot at competing for DECA, representing a chance to make an impact.
“DECA has undoubtedly helped me with public speaking, leadership, event planning, and communication,” said Eliza, who added and that she can’t wait to continue learning and developing those skills.
Along with Ethan, she helped to organize more than 30 DECA members, who volunteered their time and energy to help run the event. From check-in and water stations to course marshaling and cleanup, DECA members played essential roles to ensure the event was enjoyable for all participants. Additionally, DECA members gathered at William Jeanes Library to design encouragement posters to be displayed along the race route. These signs featured motivational quotes and dog-themed art that kept participants smiling and energized throughout the course.
“We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support from our community, which helped make this event such a success," said Ethan. "We also want to thank every single person who contributed, especially our teachers, administrators, custodians, and everyone in between."
The students also shared how grateful they are for their DECA Chapter Advisor, Ms. Beth Rickard, whose guidance, encouragement, and mentorship helped shape the event from start to finish.
In addition to raising money for shelter pets, the event highlighted the power of student leadership and what can be accomplished when young leaders take initiative to make a difference, and when peers come together. The event stands as a proud example of what DECA members can achieve together while strengthening their skills and their community.
