PWHS Concert Band celebrated 30th annual Sleigh Ride
The Plymouth Whitemarsh High School (PWHS) Concert Band marked a significant milestone by concluding its 2024 Winter Concert with the 30th annual performance of Leroy Anderson’s timeless classic, “Sleigh Ride."
More than a dozen alumni joined the band onstage, and many more were members of the audience.
“Sleigh Ride brings people together,” said band director Tonia Kaufman. “It allows the students and alumni to feel a part of something bigger.”
The performance has evolved over the years, incorporating dynamic elements such as dancing percussionists and a highlight for the low brass section. However, this tradition began as a “happy accident,” according to Mrs. Kaufman.
During her first year as the PWHS band director, the ensemble performed an arrangement of “Sleigh Ride” for their winter concert. Inspired by the piece, the students requested to play the original composition, which is more challenging, the following year. When they suggested reprising it again in the third year, a tradition was born.
Three decades later, “Sleigh Ride” has become a favorite moment of the PWHS Winter Concert, uniting past and present members of the band while spreading holiday cheer with the community.
